The short story of "World Travel in 360"
It all started in Italy, with Federico Debetto and his company – KMedia Studio, which was born in January 2001 as a web agency.
In August 2013, after more than 12 years of success in the web industry, the sight of a Google Trekker(a Google Camera, mounted on a backpack) passing through his home city, totally changed the destiny of his company, which from February 17, 2014, becomes a Google Trusted Photographer and in a few months will dedicate itself 100% to promotion through Google Maps and technology Street View.
We launched the first global tour of a small municipality in Google Maps, in the spring of 2015 and from that moment we gradually improved this revolutionary system to better fit the requests of many touristic destinations, becoming, in the 2 following years, the leading Italian company for Google based projects.
In May 2017, during a mapping project in Albania, we were invited by Google as speakers at the Street View Summit 2017 in Tokyo, and at that time we did not know that it would be only the first of a long series, then repeating the experience in 2018 in Mountain View (USA) at the Google headquarters, with the Elba Smart Exploring project, the first project in the world for systematic mapping of walking paths of an entire island.
In 2019 our friend and collaborator Nickolay Omelchenko joined the WTI360 team and the same year we created the Zanzibar mapping project – the first in the world, sponsored pro-bono mapping of a whole nation. Which we presented in our keynote speech at the “Google Street View Summit 2019” in London. Again with Nickolay, the following year, we visited and photographed the interior of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, infamous for the 1986 accident, bringing visitors for a virtual tour of the abandoned powerplant, and inside the safety cover of the reactor, that melted during the disaster.
Since 2020, as soon as Google introduced bike navigation in Italy, we take care of mapping the whole of the country’s cycle network by regions and provinces, capturing every angle in superb 11K quality. With this technology we have made the mapping of the Via di Dante, within the interReg Tuscany Emila Romagna project, and the Via Francesca della Sambuca.
In the middle of 2022, the WTI360 team expanded even more, after Dimitar Kunev joined us with the mission to reach even more worldwide destinations and put them on the map.
We have been hard at work and shortly will introduce you to our most recent project – The full mapping of the exotic Sao Tome and Principe, an island country in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa.
And that is not all, by the end of 2023 we have the full mapping of three more countries on our roadmap, so stay tuned…
